FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP)– One-time New England Patriots football player Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison Wednesday in a fatal late-night shooting, sealing the failure of a professional athlete who one time had a $40 million contract and a magnificent career in front of him.

The criminal prosecution argued that Hernandez put the murder weapon in a box and later had his fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins, get rid of it by throwing it in a dumpster the day after the murder. When she got rid of it, Jenkins testified that she did not know what was in the box. She added that the box weighed around 40 pounds and claimed Aaron Hernandez told her it was “important” that she remove it.
